Beautiful teeth again

we present what the implant is made of

One of the most modern ways to regain a beautiful smile are implants. Implants are tiny screws screwed into the jaw bone and / or mandible to recreate the tooth root of the lost tooth. Then a new tooth is made on this "artificial root".

First used in 1965 by Professor Brenemark, they are now very popular among dental patients. Initially (and for a long period of time) implants were made only of titanium, because this material had all the features necessary for the implantsí function, such as high resistance, durability and, very importantly, biocompatibility.

Over the years, of course, implants have been more and more "improved", eg to make the healing proceed faster, the surface of the implant has been prepared in a special way (it is rough, uneven, resembles the screw), which stimulates and accelerates bone growth and its integration with the implant.

The only downside of titanium implants can be their silver-gray color.

After years of implantation, some patients may have a gentle regression of the gums, which in people with very thin gums may cause a slight "translucent" implant, so there may be bruising on the edge of the gum.

Therefore, over the years, an alternative for all currently used titanium implants has been created. Researchers began to look for material with titanium-like properties. That's how they came across a zirconium. Ivory-colored material, with similar (but not so much) strength and durability, which advantage over titanium is its color. Zirconium implants are made of substance resembling tooth tissue, but the material is more resistant to abrasion. Zirconium oxide is a very safe substance that has been used in medicine for many years, for example for the production of hip joint endoprostheses. Zircon reflects light in the same way as natural teeth. However, it is slightly less stable than titanium - when implanting zirconia implants it might happen more often that bone augmentation will be necessary. Further advantages of zirconium are: high resistance to abrasion and damage, zirconium does not change the taste of dishes, is not sensitive to temperature changes in the oral cavity and does not show negative interactions with other materials used in dentistry.

The lows of zirconium implants include their low availability (only few dental clinics offer zirconium implants) and their high price (higher than those of titanium). However, the main problem that specialists see is its resistance and durability - they are slightly lower than titanium and therefore you will not find them in the offer of every implantologist. In addition, zirconium is not yet as well studied as titanium - the research and observations have not been conducted for as long as those related to titanium implants.

Currently, the world is conducting research on another material, which may become an alternative to titanium and zirconium in a few or a dozen years - we mean here PEEK. This material has already been used in medicine, for example for the production of prosthetic elements implanted in the spine, as well as in the dentures of dental prosthetics. Unfortunately, it is not yet as well known as the two previous ones, and so far it is not known which side will lead the scientists ... will there be found an ideal material, an alternative for titanium and zirconium?
