Dental (MINI)implants

we present a graphic with mini implants

Mini-implants, one of the newest inventions in the field of dentistry, are currently used in prosthodontics and modern orthodontics. We will discuss below their use only in prosthetic treatment because this is what we do.

Mini-implants are nothing else but titanium screws, very similar to ordinary implants, only with smaller dimensions - up to 3 mm in diameter. Titanium, and therefore biocompatible - neutral to our body, which it not treated as 'foreign bodies'.

Implanting a mini-implant is a very low invasive procedure. This procedure does not require the placement of the mucoperiosteal flap and is performed under local anesthesia, which is absolutely sufficient. Also, the consequences of the procedure, such as swelling or pain, in most cases are much less onerous for patients than after implanting standard implants. Most often, this procedure does not require sewing, and the load of implants can occur immediately after the surgery.

Who are mini-implants for?

Mini-implants are intended for people who cannot benefit from conventional implant treatment - the level of bone loss in these patients precludes implantation of the prostheses with normal dimensions. Mini-implants are used to stabilize prostheses already used by the patient, especially in the mandible.
Many patients opt for removable dentures, because of the low costs involved, but after a short time gluing of the prosthesis, its mobility during use and the fear that the prosthesis can move or fall, makes them think about another solution. One of the options is to stabilize the prosthesis with mini-implants.

Summing up the unquestionable advantages of mini-implants are:

  • a possibility of using them in patients with higher bone atrophy,
  • using them on patients disqualified from this reason for the implantation of full-size implants,
  • the procedure of implanting of mini-implants is very low invasive, which is why it can be an alternative for people whose health condition is contraindication for performing larger and heavier procedures,
  • the treatment is quick, and its consequences are not so bothersome (less pain and swelling) ,
  • the possibility of immediate loading of mini-implants,
  • the better stabilization and cushioning of mobile prostheses,
  • low price.

Here also should be added that the mini-implants also have cons which include:
  • a lower durability (mini-implants are not as resistant to loads as standard implants),
  • greater risk of non-integrating the mini-implant with the bone (compared to standard implants).
