Breast reduction surgery aims at reduction of the volume of breasts by placing implants in so called 'sockets' (spaces placed in the breast tissue during the procedure). Techniques and ways of performing this procedure are various.

Generally speaking the procedure involves removing skin, fibres and fat excess from inside the breast, as well as breast reduction and modeling. It is, however, surgical procedure therefore it is essential that patient consults any ambiguities or questions with the surgeon.

This type of surgery usually allows a quick return to patient's daily activities.
Patient's hospitalisation usually lasts around 24 hours, if any complications, however, the patient will stay in the clinic until his full recovery. This decision is made by the surgeon.

Problems that can occur after breast reduction surgery:

  • Bleeding,
  • Infecions,
  • Lack of feeling or limited sensitivity of the nipple.

Should any above problems occur, the surgeon together with his medical staff will be onsite for any potential help.

Basic information about breast reduction surgery:

First mentions regarding breast reduction surgery are from 18th century. At that time breast reduction surgery was only performed for medical reasons, only later the external appearance and aesthetic aspects were taken into account.

Nowadays breast reduction surgeries are performed for 2 basic reasons: First of them has only medical aspect, such as gigantomastia, back pain, incorrect posture.
Second reason is aesthetic aspect, such as desire to harmonize the breasts with the rest of the body.

Breast reduction surgery aims at removing a part of gland excess and their proper placement and modeling.

Before the surgery:
An initial medical appointment with the surgeon takes place as a first thing. In this type of surgery, an individual recognition of the case and its thorough discussion are very important. Thanks to this, the surgeon can order the appropriate examinations that are necessary to perform the procedure.

It is essential to inform the surgeon about any health problems, potential treatment or medications taken during medical consultation.

Breast reduction surgery is advised against to people suffering from cardiovascular disease or blood disease.

Surgery:
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
The whole process of the surgery will be discussed with the anesthesiologist during consultation a few hours before the procedure.
The duration of such procedure is between 1 to 2,5 hours.
In case of occuring any additional illnesses, the plastic surgeon might want to have other specialists present during the procedure.

After the surgery:
Right after breast reduction treatment a patient must put on a special bra that will be worn for appropriate period of time (it is specified by the surgeon).
24 hour clinic hospitalisation is expected after breast reduction surgery.
The surgeon visits the patient on the next day and assesses her health condition. After this appointment the surgeon decides whether the patient can be discharged from the hospital.
Slight pain complaints might be felt after the surgery, which are minimised by appropriate antibiotics prescribed by the plastic surgeon. A slight irritation, small bleeding and sensitivity in the around the nipples are also possible to occur.
There are follow up visits scheduled within the next few days.
The sutures used for this type or procedure are classic (removed by the doctor later on) or absorbable (not to be removed, they disappear themselves after some time).
Selection of appropriate sutures depends on the time the patient will remain in the country.

Questions and doubts:
No surgeon can guarantee that the patient will be 100% happy and satisfied with the results of the surgery. Every specialist's work is based on his own experience and professionalism, but the effects of the surgery can sometimes not go together with the expectations.
Every surgery needs to be certified, meaning confirmed that it had been performed with all rules and regulations, but the satisfaction can depend on other factors, not necessarily related to medical aspects.
This must be said in order to indicate pros and cons before the surgery.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

  • When will I be able to return to my normal life?

  • Of course yes, after 4-5 weeks it is usually possible to return to sport.

  • Can I sunbathe after breast reduction surgery?

  • Of course yes, but the surgeon decides how long the patient needs to stay away from sun (usually few weeks).

  • When do I see the final effect of breast reduction surgery?

  • Generally speaking, already after 2 months we can notice the effects, however, every case is different and it is very difficult to indicate a specific date.
