Breast reduction for men

we present normal and abnormal male breast

Gynecomastia is the excessive growth of the gland or breast tissue causing enlargement of male chest.

The purpose of the treatment is to reduce the volume of the male breast.

It is done by removing excess of breast gland or by performing small liposuction.
Such treatment is chosen by men, who have unnatural enlargement of breast, usually resulted from an imbalance of hormone levels. People who decide to undergo liposuction predominantly want to remove excess of body fat from particular areas (f.e. stomach, hips, legs, chin, neck etc).
However, it is important to know, that patients who decide to do this surgery should not choose weight loss as a major reason. A superior goal of liposuction is not weight loss, but an adequate balance of the entire body.
Usually this problem has no negative effect on person's health, but psychologically it can be bothering and embarrassing.
Generally speaking local anesthesia is used, however, in some situations general anesthesia can be offered. If it happens (very rarely), such decision is made after a medical consultation between the surgeon, anesthesiologist and the patient.

This kind of surgery does not require any long recovery. Gynecomastia surgery and patient's hospitalization take place within only 1 day, while in case of any complications patient stays in the hospital until his full recovery. The decision is made by the surgeon.
In case of any aforementioned problems, the surgeon along with his medical staff will be available to help. It is important to mention that such cases are very rare, however, every person deserves to be aware of the pros and cons of the gynecomastia surgery.

Histopathological examination is recommended before the surgery.

In order to assess patient's health condition, there will be follow-up visits with the surgeon a few days after the treatment.

The sutures used for the surgery can be classic or absorbable (this type of sutures is particularly desired, as there is no need to get them removed).

We do not recommend these surgeries people who suffer from:

  • Cardiopulmonary disease;
  • Thrombocytosis and blood disorders;
  • Other illnesses;
  • People who are influenced by the environment or prevailing fashion (it is FUNDAMENTAL to be 100% sure and ready for the surgery).

Basic information about gynecomastia surgery

The first gynecomastia surgery was performed in 40's of XX century, even though some sources give different dates. The surgery concerns only males. Its aim is to model male breast by removing excess of chest gland. It is caused by unnatural growth of chest gland, accumulation of fat tissue around chest, as well as by the aging process.

The patient that considers gynecomastia surgery is driven purely by aesthetic reasons, because there are no health disorders caused by gynecomastia.

Before the surgery:
First and important step that needs to be taken before the surgery is carrying out all the necessary tests required by the surgeon. The are no bigger contraindications for the surgery, however it is important to remember not to overuse alcohol and smoke excessively just before.
It is essential to inform the doctor about any medications or treatment during the first consultation.

Gynecomastia surgery is done usually under local anesthesia, however, in some situations (very rarely) general anaesthesia might be used. Such decision is made by the anesthesiologist who is present at the medical consultation. The duration of the surgery is around 1 to 1,5h. It mainly depends on whether the surgeon will undertake a small liposuction in addition to the main procedure.
Should the patient inform the surgeon about some special health conditions during medical consultation, he might decide to have other specialist to be present during surgery.

After the surgery:
After the surgery the patient stays in the clinic for next couple of hours (if necessary, it might be a night stay, but this decision is made by the surgeon).
The surgery might cause some pain or soreness, however, it can all be neutralized by painkillers given by surgeon.
A special elastic garment is given to wear, after the procedure is finished. There will be follow-up visits after the surgery in order to access patient's health condition.

The sutures used for the surgery can be classic or absorbable.

Questions and doubts:
No surgeon can guarantee that the patient will be 100% happy and satisfied with the results of the surgery. Every specialist's work is based on his own experience and professionalism, but the effects of the surgery can sometimes not go together with the expectations.
Every surgery needs to be certified, meaning, confirmed that it had been performed with all rules and regulations, but the satisfaction can depend on other factors, not necessarily related to medical aspects.

All this above must be said in order to indicate pros and cons of the surgery, not to lose important patients later on.

  • When will I be able to return to my normal life?

  • Most patients feel ready to return to work just 2 days after a male breast reduction, depending on the nature of their work. It is important though to wear special elastic garment 4-5 weeks after surgery.

  • If and when will I be able to return to sport?

  • After gynecomastia surgery it should be fine to start sport after 3-4 weeks, however, more specific information will be provided by the surgeon after the consultation.

  • Can I sunbathe after gynecomastia?

  • Of course yes, but the surgeon decides how long the patient needs to stay away from sun (usually few weeks).

  • When do I see the final effect of gynecomastia surgery?

  • Every surgery has its own rules and it is hard to generalise everything, but the average time of waiting to see the final effect is around 1 to 2 months.
