Types of gynecomastia

The purpose of categorizing different gynecomastia types is to determine, which treatment is the most suitable for an individual patient, based on the underlying problem.

  • Pure Glandular gynecomastia:

  • Significant increase in the gland is observed, usually caused by hormonal problems, various disease (f.e. cirrhosis) or by steroid use.
We offer medical consultation with a plastic surgeon, who will recognise and decide about the way and type of the operation. In this situation, a surgical removal of the gland by an incision close the nipple is required. Sometimes surgery needs to be combined with liposuction, but only if there is excess of both, the gland and fat tissue, to allow good contouring.
Local anesthesia is used and a special elastic garment will need to be worn after the surgery.

  • Fatty gynecomastia, called Pseudo-gynecomastia

  • This type of gynecomastia occurs when excess of adipose tissue is present, which significantly increases the volume of breast.
During the surgery, a surgeon performs liposuction, thus removing the excess of fat tissue, but in such manner that proper look of the chest is shaped and systematised. Liposuction leaves the patient with no visible marks on his body, beyond a tiny 'slit', which disappears over time without any aesthetic problems.
It is recommended to undertake this surgery in the younger age due to the reason that younger tissues can easier undergo healing processes, therefore no excess of skin is present after the surgery. This problem can also easily be solved by using special compression garment (all these matters are raised during medical consultation with a surgeon).
Local anesthesia is used in the above surgery.

  • Pubertal gynecomastia

  • This is the condition that afftects boys who are passing through puberty and it is a result of hormonal fluctuations during this period of their lives. This problem could fade away, however, unfortunately some boys may never lose this pubertal gynecomastia and will require a surgery to deal with it.

  • Severe gynecomastia

  • This type of gynecomastia commonly affects those who have lost skin elasticity at an older age or men who have been obese or overweight at one point in their life and lost weight. The skin have become saggy and breast have been severly enlarged.
    Surgery is the recommended treatment.

There are more types of gynecomastia but we have decided to describe only ones that can be corrected through plastic surgery.

On the website about gynecomastia you have a possibility to obtain detailed information about how the surgery is proceeded.
Nowadays more and more men undergo breast reduction surgery.
The main reason for choosing gynecomastia surgery is fat excess deposited in the breast area, causing the dysfunction of glands.
During the procedure, the surgeon removes fat excess by performing small liposuction. Scars that can remain after the surgery are almost unnoticeable (incision performed along the nipple).
The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia. Right after the procedure, the patients is provided with a compression piece of clothing, which is aimed at proper shaping of skin and breasts.
