Hair Trasplant

Hair transplant

What do we offer?

We do offer to our patients two methods of transplantation:

STRIP (FUT) - we can transplant over 4,000 transplants during one treatment.

FUE - allows you to plan treatments for 3500 - 4000 transplants.

The performance of hair transplantation comes down to the idea of taking hair from one place on the patient's body and implanting it in another place. This seemingly simple idea becomes quite complicated at closer acquaintance and requires consideration of many factors that may affect the expected effect of the treatment.

The method of obtaining material for transplantation (so-called transplants or grafts) is one of several stages of the procedure, but currently it is the most discussed topic during consultations with patients due to the large number of contradictory opinions in this regard.

Today's reconstructive hair surgery has two methods of obtaining implants.

One of them is so-called STRIP method. It consists in taking a strip of hairy skin from the occipital region and then dividing it (using optical instruments) to obtain individual implants. The choice of this method imposes a solution in the form of stitching remaining after removal of the cavity and results in a linear scar in this area.

Another method is the FUE method (follicular unit extraction), which consists of the point retrieval of small fragments of the skin from the occipital region (with a diameter of 0.8 to 1.0 mm) containing hair follicles.

After obtaining material for transplantation (transplants), the treatment proceeds in the same way in both cases. In the "receiving" area (in which we transplant hair), transplants are implanted with one of the commonly used methods, without distinction, which methods have been taken. Both methods differ, therefore, only in the manner of proceeding in the "donation" region (the place of hair removal) and it is currently believed that the final result of the treatment is not affected by the method of collection.

STRIP is called by the patients the "old" method, and the FUE - "new" and often new is understood as "good" and the old one is "bad". Is it right?

Ten years ago, the FUE method was discussed as a method replacing the STRIP method. This view was not defended in time and after years of application, it turned out that it is impossible to completely eliminate STRIP type method, that each of these methods has its pros and cons, each of them should be used to solve other problems and that, in principle , these are mutually complementary methods.

The presence of occipital scar is a serious problem for many patients and for years FUE has been advertised as a non-scarring method. All patients after a STRIP operation have linear scars, which are covered by long hair over it. Traces after taking FUE are virtually invisible. After healing the place of collection, sometimes after the hair is spread on the back of the head, tiny "dots" are visible. This effect, if it occurs, is masked by hair with a length of 1-2 mm. The size of "dots" depends very much on the size of the tools - that's why we normally use instruments with a diameter of 0.8 mm for hair removal at our clinic to minimize this phenomenon.

The comparison of both methods must also touch several other issues. The first of these is the survival of implants. Implants obtained by the FUE method are thinner, have less tissue around the hair follicle. For this reason, they are more susceptible to the so-called "drying of implants", which is the main factor damaging the hair follicle during the procedure. This phenomenon prevents the proper and careful handling of implants, storage under appropriate conditions and temperatures and shortening the time between collection and implantation.

Drying of hair follicles is among others raised by SAFER critics as "inscribed in the method" of operating and performing this procedure.

We do not use this device!

An important issue is also the degree of damage to the hair follicles at the time of collection. STRIP ensures that the entire procedure is carried out under the control of sight and the degree of damage is small. The risk of cutting a hair or a hair follicle is inherent in the FUE collection itself, as the process of 'downloading' takes place "blindly". The surgeon should adjust his movements to the angles of hair growth, fine-tune the depth of the incision and control conditions which are often variable even in the same patient when moving to the sides of the head or closer to the neck. It is also almost always the case that the percentage of damaged hair grows with the size of the treatment. On the other hand, damage to the hair follicle is not permanent and does not stay in the skin, and not the hair follicle that has been obtained will produce the hair. Recently, there are reports in the world that an accidentally "halved" hair follicle can produce hair in the skin and in an implant.

FUE collection is currently carried out using the so-called manual or mechanical systems.

Patients receive a lot of contradictory information on this subject:

1. The problem of larger damage to the hair follicle is generally raised at the time of mechanical removal compared to the manual removal, which is "more delicate".

2. On the other hand - mechanical removal is fast and allows to take large quantities of grafts during one operation (short time of staying outside the body)

3. We reconciled these two phenomena using the FUE EXTRACTOR device.

The FUE EXTRACTOR we use in the clinic combines the advantages of both systems: - it's fast like mechanical systems! - the way of programming the tip movements makes this process similar to hand movements performed during manual pickup, so it does not only perform rotary motion like in all mechanical systems!

FUE is a much more work-intensive and time-consuming method.

A few years ago, it was still believed that STRIP was able to provide a much larger number of implants during one download. Currently, the development of the FUE method, experience and training of staff, improved tools allow planning equally large, often also larger, downloads than those made using the STRIP method. Yes, they are time-consuming and labor-intensive, but the effect of scarring is widely appreciated by patients. On the other hand, FUE extends the area available for hair removal - it is possible to take head from these parts that are not suitable for download as a strip of skin and the possibility of obtaining hair from other parts of the body is open.

The period of convalescence after the procedure is also significant. A large FUE collection requires preparation (practically a hair shave) of a large space on the occiput. It is impossible to cover such a large area with growing hair from the top just after the procedure. It will become invisible only when the shaved hair will grow back.

Most patients who have undergone both procedures say that the recovery process after taking the FUE is more comfortable, less painful and less troublesome. Most patients do not require analgesics in the postoperative period. The sensory disorders on the occiput are much less frequent.

All these aspects should be taken into account when planning the surgery and choosing the surgery method. However, be aware that they relate only to one of the stages of the planned surgery and that their impact on the final effect is considerable but not the only one.

In summary, it should be stated that:

Both methods - STRIP and FUE - are acceptable methods of obtaining material for hair transplantation,
The cost / benefit ratio makes the STRIP method more cost-effective,
FUE is the only method for patients who stress the lack of a linear scar on the back and intend to shortly cut their hair in the future,

Nowadays, FUE offers similar, often larger, quantities of hair that can be collected,
The survival and acceptance of implants are the same in both methods.

In any case, it is necessary to consult with a surgeon experienced in hair transplantation, who uses both methods, knows the advantages and disadvantages of each of them and will help the patient to decide on the method of surgery.

We successfully use both methods in Medical Hair, but the FUE method is becoming dominant due to the unique FUE EXTRACTOR in Europe.
