Abdominoplasty - tummy tuck

we present preparation for abdominoplasty procedure

Abdominoplasty surgeries have been performed and perfected just recently. Abdominal lifting has its place among first 5 in the most popular surgeries in Europe and North America. Patients who decide to undergo this type of surgery are usually driven by the need of removing skin and fat excess from different parts of the body.

The most common reasons of performing abdominoplasty are: pregnancy, large weight loss, as well as a drop in skin elasticity. The main job of this procedure is an elimination of these problems by removing skin excess from the lower abdomen and middle part of it.

Before the surgery:
It is essential to undertake all the important tests before the surgery indicated by the surgeon during medical consultation. They are usually taken onsite.
Abdominoplasty should only be done on patients who have no health problems whatsoever.
Moreover it is almost forbidden to smoke before and after surgery (at least 3-4 weeks). Patients should also minimise alcohol intake.
It is important to inform the surgeon about any potential medications taken or any treatment.

Surgery:
Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia by intubating the patient. This decision, however, will be made at the initial medical consultation with the anesthesiologist. The surgery lasts usually from 2 to 4 hours, but everything depends on the body surface that needs to be operated.

After the surgery:
Minimal patient's stay in the hospital after the surgery is 48 hours but it depends on his health condition. This decision is made by the surgeon.
Any pain afflictions are effectively minimised by the painkillers given to the patient by the doctor.

Questions and doubts:
No surgeon can guarantee that the patient will be 100% happy and satisfied with the results of the surgery. Every specialist's work is based on his own experience and professionalism, but the effects of the surgery can sometimes not go together with the expectations.
Every surgery needs to be certified, meaning confirmed that it had been performed with all rules and regulations, but the satisfaction can depend on other factors, not necessarily related to medical aspects.
This must be said in order to indicate pros and cons before the surgery.

HOW TO PROCEED AFTER AN UNDERGONE ABDOMINOPLASTY SURGERY

Apart from the choice of the right surgeon, a suitable post-operative treatment is also an important matter, in:

  • A few days after the surgery
  • A few weeks after the surgery
  • A few months after the surgery

We would like to analyze an above topic in more depth, due to the fact that in our opinion there is not enough attention sacrificed to patients who underwent abdominoplasty surgery and to the recovery process, which has tremendous importance in the achieved results of the procedure.

An important matter here is the fact that the abdominoplasty was carried out after previously performed liposuction.
In case of performing abdominoplasty with liposuction very often it is recommended that in first days after the surgery a 5 minute activity (brisk walk) alternately with 1 hour of full rest is prescribed to the patients. This method is not commonly known, but during medical consultation you will have a confirmed recommendation of this method.

It is very important that after the abdominoplasty patient needs to avoid injuries in the surgically treated areas, as well as loosening pressure garments due to skin irritation or too excessive pressure (this situation is unfortunately very common). We do realise, that very often patients need a couple of days to get used to wearing the compression clothes but it is a must after the abdominoplasty.
Another common mistake is too excessive activity in first days after the surgery. Even in case of fantastic post-operative well-being the patient still needs to spare himself.
A basic and important thing is to follow surgeon's recommendations, to take any prescribed medications and to stay cautious when it comes to the operated areas.

After a few weeks

After a few weeks since the surgery the wounds will be totally closed and without stitches. The most common mistake made by patients is, an immediate return to the full and increased sport activity after 8 weeks of recommended precautionary.

Very often, in patients, after a couple of weeks from the procedure an abdomen might appear enlarged, a bit rigid and asymmetric which obviously causes panic. It is, however, a normal process of recuperation, which may last up to a couple of months.

More than once, the fear of bad results of the procedure takes precedence over reason, the patients then decide to use different types of creams, massages and therapies. This may only leads to the worsening of the patient's health condition which results in losing of serous fluid and infection. The only guarantee of patient's satisfaction is by following surgeon's recommendations.

After a few of months

Within first months after the surgery, first effects of the procedure become visible. In 3-4 months afterwards, the abdomen becomes softer and the swelling decreases significantly. The incision along the abdomen is still red, however, when it totally pales it will become almost of fully invincible.

A full sport activity can be now retaken (except for some special cases). In case of the need of using s special whitening products, a surgeon's consent is necessary. In case of the inverted 'T' shaped incision, a point of contact of 2 lines might lengthen a healing process.

After 6 months in most cases the final effect of abdominoplasty is visible. Only scars might need more time, but the abdomen will be much more flat than before the procedure. A special recommended diet might help in achieving perfect results, not only in operated areas but in the appearance of the whole body.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
  • When will I be able to return to normal life?

  • During first 2-3 days after the surgery, a lot of rest is advised, but after 2-3 weeks, a patient can return to his normal daily activity. A special compression clothing must be worn after abdominoplasty.

  • If and when will I be able to return to sport?

  • After 4-5 weeks light exercises can be started and after 6-7 weeks full sport activity is possible.

  • Can I sunbathe after abdominoplasty?

  • Of course yes, but the surgeon decides how long the patients needs to stay away from sun (usually few weeks).

  • When do I see the final effect of abdominoplasty surgery?

  • Every surgery has its own rules and it is hard to generalise everything but usually first results of abdominoplasty can be noticed after around 3 weeks after the surgery. However, a final effect can be noticed usually after 2-3 months. Appropriately diversified diet and regular exercises can improve the results of the abdominoplasty to a significant degree.
